Course Objectives:
After completing this course, the students will be able to:
- Critically assess the English language curriculum prescribed for the Intermediate and Secondary schools of the Kingdom.
- Critically evaluate the Pupil’s Book, the Teacher’s Book, Workbooks and other teaching material prescribed by the Ministry of Education for Public Intermediate and Secondary schools.
- Develop familiarity with the subject matter to be taught at the Intermediate and Secondary schools.
- Learn about the different models of curriculum, types of language functions, language situations, language topics and grammatical items.
Course Description:
- Definition and models of curriculum
- Objectives of EFL teaching.
- Contents of EFL Curriculum.
- Intensive study of the English language curriculum prescribed for Intermediate and Secondary schools.
- Intensive appraisal of the Pupil’s Book, prescribed for the Intermediate school pupils.
- Intensive study of the relevant Teacher’s Books.
- Review of workbooks and other teaching aids (wall-charts, flash cards, etc.).
- Listening to the tapes in order to improve English pronunciation and intonation
- Critical analysis of the curriculum highlighting its strengths and weaknesses.
- Reflection on the pupils’ book in light of the objectives and the curriculum prescribed by the Ministry of Education and Instruction
- Critical review of the Teacher’s Books
- Writing EFL Units.
Evaluation:
Grades in the course will be based on a cumulative assessment of home assignments and class participation, term-papers, in-class quizzes, mid-term and final exams.
- Home assignments and class participation:
20 There will be frequent written home work assignments during the semester. Class participation include the student’s discussion and attendance.
- Term-paper:
20 There will be one major term paper about a selected topic. the grade will be based on depth, clarity, unity and organization of the content.
- Quizzes:
20 There will be two short in-class quizzes.
- Final exam:
40 The grade of the final exam will be based on an in-class exam which covers the whole material presented in the class.
